Planet Earth Quilt Block

Hello Quilting Friends,

I hope your quilting projects are coming along nicely and easily. Do you have special projects you’re working on? In the past, by this time of year, I’ve sewn t-shirt quilts for graduates, but I didn’t have any graduate quilts to sew.  It’s been an honor to sew graduation quilts. I learn about the graduate’s participation in clubs, sports, trips, and more through the t-shirts the parents (usually mothers) entrust to me. I ask the parent to tell me things about the graduate, so I can match sashing fabrics and backing to the graduate’s non-school interests, also.

THE SEASON:

For those experiencing Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, has the weather been cooperative? I know there have been some extremely big storms in the USA. In our yard, we had some large tree branches break off from strong winds.  My husband and I spent one night sleeping in the basement because of a tornado warning!

But the last two weeks of May, things have been much sunnier and brighter, and it’s finally warming up.

QUILT BLOCK MANIA:

WATER. That’s the theme for this month’s Quilt Block Mania.

We designers were to use “water” as the inspiration for the blocks we created to share with you.

The first few ideas I had were already posted in the group. I wanted something different that no one else had thought of – a block that would be easy enough to make.  I did an internet search of  “sources of water.” The PLANET EARTH came up! And that is my block this month.

Earth, our home planet,  is covered by 71%  WATER!

Only 3.5% is freshwater, mostly in glaciers, ice caps, and deep underground.

Wow! That really made me think! Only 3.5% of the water on the Earth is FRESH! And, much of that is in the form of ice or polar ice caps!

PLANET EARTH – I hope you like sewing the block. Making it is easy enough. I’ve made blocks similar to this using double-sided fusible applique and raw-edge zig-zag stitches for the main illustration-all on a 12.5″ x 12.5″ square background block. The directions are in the pattern and detailed.
