Oktoberfest Free Quilt Block

My quilt block for October’s Quilt Block Mania celebrates Oktoberfest.

In years past, with young children at home, I would sew and quilt Halloween-themed items with them in mind.  The girls are off on their own, and children no longer come our way on Halloween night, so I’ve begun sewing items for the Fall season.

Octoberfest is a Bavarian tradition that offers so much.

Frankenmuth, Michigan, is a 2-hour drive for us. The city celebrates the Bavarian Oktoberfest each year. This year, it was held in September, and we weren’t able to attend.

I enjoy the authentic dress, music, and food.  Others enjoy the Hofbräu beer, brewed using the original recipes from centuries ago. There is entertainment and activities for all ages. Having sewn clothes since I was a teen, I’m always interested in seeing the traditional garments worn by the people. That includes the Tyrolean hat, which I’ve designed as the free block pattern for this month.

The hat is a fusible appliqué pattern with only 6 pieces. I finished the edges of each pattern piece with satin stitching.

Sew the word October using foundation paper piecing. Sew it as the lower portion of the 12-1/2″-inch square block. The subtle Fall-colored background fabric puts the focus on the hat. Each letter finishes at 4″ tall and 1.5″ wide.
