Gradation Quilt Block

The Quilt Block Mania designers’ theme this month is ART.

Do you consider quilting a form of art? I certainly do.

Through my lifetime, I’ve dabbled in various art forms.  I’ve enjoyed woodworking. But quilting satisfies me in so many ways. The tools are not as dangerous as those used for wood. Fabric errors can be easily fixed or replaced, not so much with wood. And I am led in so many creative ways as I work.

This month’s theme made me pause and think about how quilting relates to art – or art relates to quilting.

When I began quilting, I thought of it more as a home skill, like sewing clothes. But as I explored quilting styles through classes, videos, television quilt shows, and as a quilt guild member, I began creating my own designs and developing patterns I hadn’t seen. I know now that the basic shapes of quilt pieces can be interchanged in hundreds of ways to make our quilt blocks.

With this month’s Art theme, I focused on color gradation for my block. I’m presenting an easy pattern.

I matched a light blue square center with three rounds of progressively darker blue strips. Then I framed the design with orange triangles. Orange is blue’s complementary color, and it creates a high-contrast background that makes the blue gradation look incredibly bold and vibrant.”
