Easy to Sew Valentine’s Day Table Topper

Valentine’s Day in Michigan comes during the usually dreary part of winter, so I wanted to add a bit of fun and color for my husband and me during breakfast at our kitchen island, so I designed this 25″ x 25″ quilted square that I call “Love Diamond.”

It could be made into a wall hanging, placed on the dining table, or enlarged to a sofa throw by adding extra borders.

This project uses 16 charm squares (5″ x 5″ fabric squares) in 4 different colors, a fat quarter of fabric for the corners, 1/4 yard binding fabric, 7/8 yard backing and batting, and a 7″ x 11″ fabric piece for the word Love. Changing the appliqued word or leaving it off the project is totally fine. In fact it could be made with any seasonal colors and a different word could be appliqued.  I totally embrace taking a pattern, changing up the color scheme and creating a piece for another purpose.

I used the free-motion foot for machine quilting around the letters and then meandering in the 4-patch diamond section, and the easy part was using the walking foot to sew lines parallel to the edges of the center section.
