3-D Bow Tie Block

Using silk ties a friend gave me years ago and I made a 3-D Bow Tie block as part of the Quilt Block Remix Challenge for November 2022.

I hadn’t made the 3-D block in years and needed a refresher on the folded center knot. I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jwnFfTF_wE which helped me. I cut 3″ squares for the 4-patch. It was tough sewing the folded 3-D bow into the center. I would recommend making the blocks at least 4″ square for a 7″ x 7″ finished block.

I backed the ties with fusible interfacing to make the slippery silk fabrics easier to work with. A thinner fusible than Pellon SF101 would have been better. But I got through it!

The cheddar background worked well with the prints of the ties. They all had just a bit of tan or cheddar-yellow in them.

I plan to use the many tie ends, which are folded to points, as prairie points around the large block to make a pillow. I’ll post that when I finish early in 2023.

Have you ever sewn a 3-D Bow Tie block? If so, how did you use it? in a quilt? as a small project? Leave a comment.
